22K children under the age of 14 live in New York City homeless shelters. And 95% of families with children living in shelters are Black or Hispanic.
67% of households below the poverty line spend more than half of their income on rent.
1 in 3 rental households with children are overcrowded, with overcrowding disproportionately prevalent in immigrant communities.

A stable home is key to a child’s healthy development and well-being. However, record levels of children are experiencing housing insecurity. To ensure that every child has a safe and stable place to call home, we advocate for policy solutions that address the systemic drivers of family homelessness and promote access to affordable, stable housing for all families.

CCC advocates to:

Increase investments in community-based solutions to prevent homelessness that aim to maintain housing stability before a crisis.
Expand affordable, permanent housing options for low and extremely low-income families with children.
Strengthen New York’s policies to protect the rights of tenants and mortgage holders to ensure equitable access to rental housing and home ownership.
Ensure families living in homeless shelters have access to social services, case management and income-building supports, that enable them to move into permanent housing and remain stably housed.
Improve family shelter conditions to ensure that children living in shelters have access to necessary supports that meet their educational, health, and socio-emotional needs and to promote their well-being.
